SNOW Report : 5th March 2019

The high season February School holidays are over and it is currently the ‘Fasching / Karnival’ week in Austria with schools from Holland and Germany on holiday until 9th March.

Since our last snow report a few weeks ago, the Austrian Alps have enjoyed mostly sunny weather with little in the way of precipitation and this has meant excellent piste conditions which are holding up extremely well thanks to the huge base established in early January. This base is set to last well in to April so, wherever you are heading in the next few weeks, you can expect superb piste conditions as a minimum.

There is a bit more warmth in the sun as we head in to Spring however, there is a very mixed bag of weather in the forecast for the next week with more fresh snow to come.

69/70 Lifts are open today and half a foot of fresh snow arrived in the last 24 hours higher up so some amazing skiing under mostly sunny skies today. All 270 kilometres of piste are open as are all links between Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Fieberbrunn and Leogang. Rather unsettled for the next week with a mix of snow showers, sunshine and winds. Piste conditions at the very least will remain fantastic well in to April – A shame Fieberbrunn closes early on the 31stMarch regardless of snow cover!

KITZBUHEL     (88 cm lower slopes, 152 cm upper slopes)

A dusting of new snow overnight and mostly sunny today with great skiing on and off piste.  All but one of its lifts are open today and the vast majority of runs are open with runs to resort level in very good condition. Kitzbuhel will keep some of its runs and lifts open until the Easter Weekend and, with the well-established base, it remains a good choice this season for a late season break.

STUBAI  (50 cm lower, 450 cm upper)

Austria’s largest glacier Resort has a huge 4 metres+ of snow at the top so you can expect great snow conditions here until well in to May. Runs to resort level are open and most of its lifts (22/26) are open today with skiing under sunny skies. Some windy weather higher up in the forecast for the week ahead.

SOLDEN  (93 cm, 403 cm)

Another resort with a 4 metres+ base at the top (3,000m+) and 29/31 lifts are open today with great skiing under mostly sunny skies with over 140 km of runs open. Sunny today but a mix of snow, cooler, windier weather coming in the week ahead.

ST ANTON   (45 cm, 340 cm)

77 from 88 lifts are open in the Ski Arlberg region today with most of its 305km of piste in operation with a dusting of fresh snow and clear skies and sunshine today. The off-piste is well tracked and there is some fresh snow (40-50cm over the coming week higher up) in the forecast which will refresh the off-piste options.

With the sun heading higher in the sky, Spring seems to be just around the corner however, it looks like mother nature has some very mixed weather in the bag for the coming week. High winds (40-65 km/h) are expected higher up in the next few days which may limit some lift operations and there will be some snowfall across Austria in the coming week – more falling lower down as the temperatures cool after this coming weekend. This will refresh the pistes and even offer up some decent off-piste higher up as fresh snow falls on an already well-established base.
