Resort Openings & Key Dates W18/19

Late August saw the first winter flurries higher up in the Alps and the Glacier ski areas are already gearing up for a busy pre-season. If you are planning on skiing before December then you’ll need to head to one of the Austrian Glaciers (Solden, Stubai or Kaprun). From early December, most resorts will be open with extensive snow-making in place across all resorts to make up for any shortfall from Mother Nature (thankfully, December 2017 was back to normal after 3 lean starts!). At the very least, you can expect excellent piste conditions this side of Christmas and the quiet slopes, cheaper prices and warm mountain huts are a real treat.

Here are the planned opening dates for our featured resorts:

Solden  - Skiing on the glaciers starts in early October with the FIS World Cup Ski Opening taking place 26-28th October. The main ski area opens from the middle of November onwards.

Stubai – Proposed ski opening looks set to take place later this month (late September) with more lifts and runs open from October.

Kaprun – The main glacier area is open for skiing from the middle of October onwards. Main season from 1st December.

Kitzbuhel – Remarkably, and thanks to some clever storage of last Winter’s snow, Kitzbuhel – open for over 200 ski days last season - is set to open some of its lifts (Resterkogel) from mid-late October. More lifts open end October and for weekends in November before the main ski area opens early December.

Ski Circus Saalbach-Hinterglemm / Fieberbrunn – Opening early December to 22nd December with low-season prices, main season from 22nd December.

Zell am See – Low season opening from early December, main season from 22nd December.

St Anton – Resort opens early December

KEY DATES

Christmas & New Year

Christmas and New Year dates are predominantly Saturday-Saturday 22-29.12.18 and from 29.12.18-5.1.19. We also have a small number of Hotels where we can offer arrivals on the 26th / 27th December for 7 nights. Short stay availability over the New Year is very limited.

January 2019

The perfect time for a short break in our opinion: The New Year crowds have departed, snow depths are well established and prices are lower than February with better and more flexible availability. The Hahnenkamm Downhill race in Kitzbuhel takes place on 26th January 2019 which does impact availability in the Kitzbuheler Alps region.

Half Term 2019

For most of the UK, half term 2019 falls in the week 16-23rd February. This is also a high season European Holiday week and you should definitely book early if you are restricted to these dates. The European School holiday period 2019 also stretches to the 9th March (in line with the very late Easter) and Hotel prices will be at high season rates at this time with little flexibility.

If you are considering a short ski break or ski weekend in March 2019, aim for arrivals after 9th March.

Easter 2019

Easter is very late in 2019: Easter Sunday falls on the 21st April and many resorts already have their planned closures for 7th April or earlier regardless of snow conditions. Higher, glacier resorts will be the resorts of choice at this time of the season. Head to Solden, Kaprun, St Anton and Stubai.

Flexible Ski Breaks 2019

For most of our resorts and Hotels, we have some degree of flexibility with arrival dates and duration. However, bigger, more popular resorts (St Anton, Solden for example) offer little flexibility and pretty much all Hotels only offer 7 night stays Saturday-Saturday over New Year and in the School Holidays 16/2/19 – 9/3/19. For the best availability for short breaks and ski weekends next Winter, look at pre-Christmas, January 5th to February 9th and from the 9th March onwards.
