Snow Report : 26th Mar 2018

Snow Report : 26th March 2018

It is almost the end of March and Winter is stubbornly refusing to let go across the Austrian Alps. We would usually expect warmer temperatures by this stage of the season but it is going to be another 5 to 6 days of unsettled weather before warm, sunny weather finally arrives.

With early season record snowfall and cold temperatures throughout this winter, snow coverage remains excellent with above average snow-depths for this time of year. It last snowed at the weekend and some of the best powder and blue skies of the season were to be had this last Saturday and Sunday on virtually empty slopes.

The Easter Weekend is this weekend (1st April) with some Europeans already on holiday this week through to Easter Monday. For those of us heading to the Alps over the Easter Weekend and in to next week, temperatures are finally set to climb with classic freeze-thaw spring conditions likely to dominate from Easter Monday with the best skiing in the mornings, long terrace lunches in the afternoon!

Even with all the snow, once Easter has passed, many resorts close as it becomes unviable to operate the lifts and ski areas. We have included below planned dates of closing.

FORECAST

Today, Monday 26th March, sees unsettled weather with a freezing level around 800 metres and some light snow (5-10 cm) higher up across our Austrian Resorts. A mix of sunshine, cloud and light snow is forecast for the next few days with the freezing level from 1,000-1400 metres depending on where you are in Austria. On Saturday, around 15 cm of new snow is forecast on the upper slopes in the Kitzbuheler Alps region and up to 30cm on the Stubai Glacier. Further west (St Anton), strong winds from the south will accompany the snow.
